What is Glucotrol XL?

Glucotrol XL is a prescription medication used to lower high blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. Glucotrol XL belongs to the sulfonylureas drug class.

Drugs in this class lower blood glucose levels by stimulating insulin release from the beta cells of the pancreas. Their action is dependent upon the presence of functioning beta cells, therefore, sulfonylureas do not work in people with Type 1 diabetes. Sulfonylureas stimulate insulin release by blocking ATP sensitive potassium channels in the beta cells, reducing potassium permeability. This causes depolarization of the cell and increases calcium entry, increasing insulin secretion.

Let your doctor know if you have a sulfa allergy, have ever had a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis, have G6PD deficiency, have kidney or liver problems, are breast-feeding, or have a narrowing of the GI (gastrointestinal) tract or a bowel block.

To avoid negative drug interactions, your doctor should also be informed about all medications that you are currently on or have had in the past two weeks. This includes prescription or over-the-counter drugs, natural products, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant. You will need to discuss the possible risks of using Glucotrol XL while you are pregnant.

What are the side effects of Glucotrol XL?

The most common side effect of Glucotrol XL is hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, characterized by irregular of fast heartbeat, fatigue, pale skin, shakiness, anxiety, sweating, hunger, irritability, or tingling or numbness of the lips, tongue, or cheek. Hypoglycemia may last for several hours and may even require medical help. Other possible side effects you may experience while using Glucotrol XL include headache, dizziness, diarrhea, feeling nervous and excitable, or gas.
