This medication is usually used in patients who have not responded to other treatments such as exercise, acetaminophen, or physical therapy. This medication works by acting as a lubricant and shock absorber in the joint which helps the knee to move smoothly and reduces pain.
This FDA-approved medication comes in the form of an intra-articular pre-filled syringe. Your doctor will administer this medication by injection into the affected joint, usually once a week. Extra fluid may need to be removed from the joint before injecting this medication. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.
