Efudex is a brand-name prescription medication that is used to treat scaly skin growths known as actinic or solar keratoses that may be caused by skin cancer. This medicine may also be used in the treatment of superficial basal cell carcinoma. Efudex treats skin conditions by interfering with the growth of skin cells, causing abnormal skin cells that grow too fast to die.
Efudex comes in the form of a 5% topical cream meant forexternal use on your skin. This medication should not be taken by mouth. Follow all instructions provided on your prescription label. Your healthcare professional will prescribe a dose based on an assessment of your current medical condition, drugs you are already using, and your body's response to treatment. Do not use this medication in smaller or larger doses than what is recommended by your doctor.
Rinse and dry the affected area with a towel before applying this medication. Efudex can then be applied with your fingertips or a non-metal applicator. Apply enough of this medication to cover the entire affected area with a thin film. Do not use this medication on the skin that is peeling, irritated, or infected.
