Depakote, generically named divalproex sodium, is a brand-name prescription drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of seizure disorders. Although the exact mechanism of Depakote is not entirely understood, it is known to increase the brain concentrations of certain neurotransmitters of the brain. Depakote is an oral tablet that should not be chewed or crushed. It is recommended to take this medication with food to avoid an upset stomach. Take plenty of fluids while taking this medication. There are two types of Depakote available, extended-release and delayed-release. Dosage and frequency are determined by the Depakote release form your provider chooses, your weight, medical condition, and response to treatment. What are the side effects of Depakote?

The most common side effects include diarrhea, dizziness, hair loss, vision problems, changes in menstruation, tremors, and weight change. Severe allergic reactions to Depakote are not common.
