Is there a generic for Creon?

Creon is a brand-name drug. Presently, there is no generic substitute for Creon.

Who manufactures Creon?

ABBVIE manufactures Creon.

What is Creon?

Creon is a prescription drug that is taken to treat exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in people diagnosed with cystic fibrosis or chronic pancreatitis, among other conditions. If you have undergone a pancreatectomy, you can also benefit from using Creon. A pancreatectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the partial or complete removal of the pancreas.

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency prevents the pancreas from creating the necessary enzymes needed for digestion. The three enzymes needed for digestion are lipase, protease, and amylase. Lipase helps to break down fat, protease helps to break down protein, and amylase helps to break down carbohydrates.

Creon is often recommended to be taken with every meal or snack to assist in the breakdown of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in food. Creon should only be used after a doctor's consultation to determine what Creon dosage would be best for the patient's body weight and diet.

Should Creon be refrigerated?

Store Creon at room temperature away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets. This medication can be kept at slightly higher temperatures for up to 30 days. However, Creon should be discarded if exposed to higher temperatures and higher than 70% moisture. Consult your pharmacist for more information about Creon storage. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. This helps protect Creon from moisture.

What are the side effects of Creon?

There is important safety information that all patients should consider before using Creon. Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), abnormal bowel movements, stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting are some of the reported side effects of using Creon. Other side effects may include dizziness, cough, and common cold symptoms.

Fibrosing colonopathy is a rare bowel disorder that can occur when using high Creon doses. With your doctor's medical advice, you can possibly reduce your risk of having this condition when you consistently follow your dosage instructions.

Other serious side effects may include allergic reactions such as hives, trouble breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. These symptoms require emergency medical attention.

To reduce the risk of irritation in the mouth, Creon should not be chewed, crushed, or retained in the mouth.

Those with a known allergy to proteins from a porcine origin should consult their healthcare professional before taking Creon. Patients with gout or renal impairment may need to be monitored since Creon can increase blood uric acid levels.

This is not a full list of reported side effects of Creon. Talk to your doctor to know if Creon is right for you.

Are there any known interactions with Creon?

Before taking Creon, tell your healthcare provider about all of the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements. If you take vitamins or supplements that contain calcium, iron, magnesium, or aluminum, you should separate them from Creon by at least two hours.

What are alternatives for Creon?

Some alternatives for Creon include Zenpep (pancrelipase) or Pancreaze (pancrelipase). Consult your healthcare provider for more information about alternatives to Creon.
