Cefixime is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat common infections. It works by destroying bacteria and can treat bacterial infections such as bronchitis, gonorrhea, ear infections, throat infections, tonsil infections, and urinary tract infections. Cefixime is also known to treat conditions like pneumonia, salmonella, and typhoid fever. However, this prescription drug will not work to treat viral infections, the flu or cold.
Cefixime is available as an oral suspension and capsule. Cefixime is usually taken with or without food, once daily, every 24 hours. For the best results, be sure to consistently use Cefixime medication at or around the same time every day.

Common side effects of Cefixime include diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain, gas, nausea, headache, dizziness, and itching Women may experience vaginal itching and discharge.
While taking Cefixime you may also experience allergic reactions like hives, itching, and swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, and eyes, or difficulty breathing may occur. If you experience any of these side effects, get emergency medical help right away. A rare but serious skin reaction may occur, which can be life-threatening. Get emergency medical attention if you have a red or purple rash, blistering or peeling skin, fever, sore throat, or burning eyes.
Get emergency medical treatment if you experience watery or bloody stools, stomach cramps, or fever during or after taking Cefixime. Diarrhea associated with antibiotics can occur up to 2 months after treatment.
