What is Treximet?

Treximet is used to help relieve headache, pain, and other migraine symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound. It can be used to treat migraines with or without aura. 

This drug combines sumatriptan and naproxen. Sumatriptan works by binding to 5-HT1B/1D receptors on blood vessels found in the brain. This action helps to narrow blood vessels in the brain, which is believed to help relieve migraine symptoms. It can also help reduce substances in the body that can trigger migraine symptoms. Naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works to block the production of prostaglandins, which are chemicals involved with inflammation and pain. 

Treximet is only used to treat migraine headaches as soon as symptoms appear. It is not used as a preventative medicine for migraines. Treximet is not used to treat other types of headaches such as hemiplegic (migraines that cause you to be unable to move on one side of your body) or basilar migraines (a rare form of migraine with aura). This drug will not reduce the number of headaches you suffer from, only the symptoms.

Treximet should not be used if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood circulation problems, a history of heart disease or heart bypass surgery, a history of heart attack or stroke, a heart rhythm disorder, severe liver disease, a history of a severe allergic reaction to aspirin or an NSAID, or if you are in late pregnancy.

What are the side effects of Treximet?

Common side effects involved with the use of Treximet may include dizziness; drowsiness; weakness; muscle tightness; pain, discomfort, or stiffness in your neck, throat, jaw, or chest; nausea; heartbeat problems; heartburn; tingling or numbness in your fingers or toes; and feeling hot.

If you experience nausea that seems out of proportion to your migraine, sudden or severe, stomach pain, blood in your bowel movement or it is black and sticky like tar, blood in vomit, yellow skin or eyes, unusual weight gain, feeling more tired or weaker than usual, flu-like symptoms, itching, diarrhea, swelling of the arms, legs, hands, and feet, or tenderness in your upper right side, then you should stop taking Treximet immediately and see your doctor or your healthcare provider as soon as possible.
