What is Tobradex?

Tobradex is an ophthalmic suspension used to treat and prevent eye infections. It also comes as an eye ointment. Tobradex belongs to a class of drugs known as aminoglycoside antibiotics. Tobradex contains a combination of two drugs: tobramycin and dexamethasone. Tobramycin is an antibiotic that treats bacterial infections. Dexamethasone is a steroid used to treat inflammation caused by eye infections.

Tobradex should only be used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Patients should not use Tobradex to treat viral, fungal, or mycobacterial eye infections.

You should not use Tobradex if you are allergic to aminoglycoside antibiotics, including gentamicin, tobramycin, and others. Otherwise, you may develop an allergic reaction to Tobradex.

What are the side effects of Tobradex?

Common side effects of Tobradex include redness, itching, swelling, and discomfort in and around the eyes. Dexamethasone in Tobradex can cause other side effects such as nerve damage in the eye, delayed wound healing, and elevated intraocular pressure, which could increase the risk of glaucoma. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider immediately. You should also tell your doctor right away if you experience the following side effects: new or worsening eye symptoms including discharge and swelling, vision changes, and eye pain. It is advised that you talk to your healthcare professional about these and other possible side effects because this is not a complete list.

You should not take Tobradex if you are allergic to tobramycin or dexamethasone. Signs of a serious allergic reaction include rash, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience one or more of these symptoms.
