This medication comes in the form of a nasal spray, oral tablet, and as an injectable solution. Check with your healthcare professional to find out which form of this medication is appropriate for you, as well the dose that you should be using. Your doctor usually decides your dose based on an assessment of your medical condition and your response to the treatment.
Tell your doctor if you have heart disease or if you have a family history of heart disease or high blood pressure. Your doctor may perform a heart exam before you start taking this medication. Your first dose may also be administered in your doctor's office in order to monitor for serious side effects such as chest pain.
Common side effects involved with the use of Sumatriptan may include flushing, tiredness, drowsiness, weakness, or dizziness. These effects usually occur when you first begin this medication and usually go away as your body adjusts. If you notice that these effects persist or worsen then you should contact your pharmacist or doctor immediately.
In addition to other side effects not listed here, Sumatriptan may cause an increase in your serotonin levels which could lead to a rare but serious condition known as serotonin syndrome. This is more likely to occur if you are also taking other medications that also increase your serotonin levels. Inform your doctor about all medications you are using before you start taking Sumatriptan, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and vitamins. Other side effects, some of which can be serious, may occur. Talk to your doctor about what to expect when taking Sumatriptan and how to address any issues that arise.
Follow your healthcare provider’s for using Sumatriptan. Exceeding a certain amount of this medication can lead to rebound headaches, also called medication overuse headache.
Seek medical attention if you develop a fast heartbeat, hallucinations, loss of coordination, dizziness, or severe nausea.
