Salagen is a brand-name prescription drug used to relieve the dry mouth symptoms caused by head and neck radiation therapy or Sjögren's syndrome, a condition in which the immune system “misfires” and mistakenly attacks cells in the saliva and tear glands. The active ingredient in Salagen, pilocarpine, acts like a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine to activate acetylcholine receptors in the central nervous system and salivary glands. Stimulation of acetylcholine receptors in the salivary glands helps promote the secretion of saliva.
Salagen is available as a 5 mg or 7.5 mg oral tablet. It is usually started as a 5 mg tablet taken three times daily for head and neck cancer patients. The usual dose for head and neck cancer patients is around 15 to 30 mg per day. It may take up to three months for Salagen to provide maximum benefits. For people with Sjögren's syndrome, Salagen may take up to six weeks to start providing maximum benefits. For Sjögren's syndrome, it is usually taken as a 5 mg tablet four times daily.
People with liver problems should be started on a lower dose of Salagen than normal. Those with liver impairment may start treatment with Salagen by taking 5 mg twice daily.
The most common side effects of Salagen are sweating, nausea, runny nose (rhinitis), diarrhea, flushing of the skin, and chills.
