Rilutek is a brand-name prescription drug prescribed to patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. ALS is an incurable, progressive condition that kills motor neurons, the nerve cells that control voluntary muscles, in the brain and spinal cord.
Nerve cell death in ALS is caused by glutamate, which transmits signals between nerves. However, if too much glutamate builds up, the nerve cells die.
Rilutek slows but does not stop or reverse, the process of neuron death. The active ingredient in Rilutek, riluzole, blocks the release of glutamate by the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Rilutek may delay disease progression and prolong your life.
Rilutek is taken as a tablet. Other forms of riluzole are available as an oral suspension or oral film (a thin film placed on the tongue until it dissolves). Rilutek must be taken at least one hour before or two hours after a meal.

What are the side effects of Rilutek?
