Pyridium is a brand-name prescription drug that is manufactured by Amneal Pharmaceuticals. The generic version of Pyridium is called phenazopyridine hydrochloride (HCl). Other related drugs include the over-the-counter medications Azo Urinary Pain Relief and Uristat.
Pyridium is a brand-name local genitourinary tract analgesic that is used to provide relief from symptoms associated with lower urinary tract infections including urinary burning, painful, urgent, and frequent urination. However, it is not an antibiotic and does not cure urinary tract infections (UTIs). Consult your healthcare provider, who may also prescribe an antibiotic, if necessary.
Do not use Pyridium if you are allergic to phenazopyridine or if you have kidney disease.
Before taking Pyridium you should inform your doctor about any medical conditions you may have, including liver disease, diabetes, or a G6PD (a genetic enzyme deficiency). If you are pregnant, tell your doctor before taking this medication. Pyridium is not expected to harm an unborn baby, but there have been no studies in pregnant women, so if you are pregnant, do not use this medicine without medical advice from your doctor. Your doctor can determine if benefits outweigh risks in this situation. Also, inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking including all prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and supplements.
You should use Pyridium exactly as your doctor prescribes. Pyridium is usually taken three times a day with meals or after meals. Swallow the tablet whole—do not hold in the mouth or chew, crush, or break the tablet. The active ingredient in Pyridium, phenazopyridine HCl, can permanently stain contact lenses, and you should not wear them while taking this medicine. Pyridium can also cause discoloration of the urine and feces. Do not use this medication for longer than two days unless directed by your doctor to do so. Drink plenty of liquids while you are taking this pain reliever.

While taking Pyridium, you may experience common side effects such as headache, dizziness, and upset stomach or stomach cramps.
Allergic reactions to Pyridium are rare. Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction including hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, and throat.
Stop using Pyridium and call your doctor immediately if you experience serious side effects like little or no urine, swelling, rapid weight gain, confusion, loss of appetite, pain in your side or lower back, fever, pale or yellowed skin, stomach pain, nausea, and/or vomiting, and blue or purple appearance of your skin.
