Nitrostat is a prescription drug that rapidly relieves or prevents acute chest pain (angina) in patients with coronary artery disease, a condition in which the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart are too narrow. When the heart does not receive enough oxygen, the reaction can feel like a heart attack. Nitrostat belongs to a family of drugs called vasodilators that relax the muscles in blood vessels. This widens the blood vessels and allows more blood and oxygen to flow to the heart.
Nitrostat is taken during episodes of chest pain. It is placed below the tongue where it dissolves and immediately enters the bloodstream. The pain should be relieved in 1 to 5 minutes. If it does not, take another tablet 5 minutes later. Nitrostat only has a short duration of action.
The most common side effects of Nitrostat are headache, weakness, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and flushing. Nitrostat can cause severe headaches which may become less severe over time. Your doctor will prescribe a pain medication for the headaches. The most serious side effect of Nitrostat is low blood pressure. Allergic reactions to Nitrostat are uncommon and may include swelling, drug rash, or trouble breathing.
Nitrostat is toxic to children and pets and so must be kept out of their reach.
