What is Miralax used for?

MiraLax is an osmotic laxative that is used to treat occasional constipation or irregular bowel movements. MiraLax works by holding water within the colon to soften the stool and increasing the number of bowel movements to relieve constipation. This drug is available as an over the counter medication and as a prescription.

How to take Miralax

  • Your doctor will tell you how much of this medicine to take and how often. Do not take more medicine or take it more often than your doctor tells you to. This medicine is not for long-term use.

  • Always dissolve the powder in a full glass (8 ounces) of water, juice, soda, coffee, or tea before swallowing it. If you need to measure your medicine, use a marked measuring cup or spoon.

  • Measure the oral liquid medicine with a marked measuring spoon, oral syringe, or medicine cup.

  • It may take 2 days or longer for this medicine to help you have a bowel movement.
