What is Malarone?

Malarone is a prescription medication used to inhibit the growth of parasites in the red blood cells or liver caused by the bite of a certain type of mosquito. It is not sold as an over-the-counter medication and must always be prescribed by a healthcare provider. The generic version of Malarone is a combination of proguanil and atovaquone. The brand-name drug manufacturer is GlaxoSmithKline.  

Malarone is used to treat and prevent malaria in countries where malaria is common. If you are taking Malarone to prevent malaria, your doctor will instruct you to begin treatment one or two days prior to entering an area where malaria is common. Malarone should be taken during your stay and for seven days after your return. If you cannot continue treatment with the medication consult with your doctor about another malaria prevention alternative. Malarone is taken orally as prescribed by a healthcare professional. It must be taken with food or a milky drink. There is no 100% effective malaria medication for treating and preventing the infection. For desired results, keep using the medication as directed. If you vomit within an hour after taking Malarone, repeat the dosage. What are the side effects of Malarone?
