It is not sold as an over-the-counter medication and must always be prescribed by a healthcare provider. The generic version of Malarone is a combination of proguanil and atovaquone. If you cannot continue treatment with the medication consult with your doctor about another malaria prevention alternative. Malarone is taken orally as prescribed by a healthcare professional. It must be taken with food or a milky drink. There is no 100% effective malaria medication for treating and preventing the infection. For desired results, keep using the medication as directed. If you vomit within an hour after taking Malarone, repeat the dosage.
