What is Loratadine?

Loratadine is an antihistamine used to treat allergy symptoms. It can treat symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergies, such as sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and runny nose. It is also used for treating hives and skin itching caused by chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children at least six years old. Loratadine is not used to treat anaphylaxis or a serious allergic reaction.

Loratadine works by blocking the actions of histamine, a chemical produced by the body in response to an allergen, such as pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. Loratadine is available as an oral tablet that is usually taken once daily.

Loratadine is available over-the-counter and as a prescription medication. It's important to follow the instructions on the label or as directed by a doctor. Also, before taking loratadine, make sure to tell your doctor if you have any other medical conditions, if you are taking any other medications, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Before taking Loratadine, read all directions on the product package. Use this medication according to the product label or as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.

What are the side effects of Loratadine?

The most common side effects of Loratadine include drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, and an upset stomach. Other side effects may include sore throat, nervousness, diarrhea, and weakness. These side effects generally are mild and go away after a few days. Consult with a doctor if you have any serious side effects or if side effects persist.

Although rare, allergic reactions to Loratadine are possible and may cause symptoms such as rash, hives, wheezing, swelling of the face or throat, and difficulty breathing or swallowing. Get medical help immediately if you experience any allergic reactions. You can also report side effects and allergic reactions to the FDA.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects associated with taking Loratadine. Get medical advice from your doctor and information on the risks and benefits of taking Loratadine.

Loratadine dosages

The typical adult dose of loratadine for allergy relief is 10 mg once daily. The dosage may be lower in children and vary depending on the condition being treated.

Consult a healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns about the right dosage of Loratadine. You should also contact your healthcare provider if symptoms do not improve with treatment. Do not take more than the recommended dosage or stop taking Loratadine without talking to a healthcare provider.

Loratadine alternatives

Loratadine is a second-generation antihistamine. There are several alternatives to loratadine for treating allergies, including other antihistamines, nasal corticosteroid sprays, and leukotriene modifiers.

Other second-generation antihistamines that may be taken instead of Loratadine include Zyrtec (cetirizine), Allegra (fexofenadine), and Clarinex (desloratadine). First-generation antihistamines, such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Chlor-Trimeton (chlorpheniramine), may cause more drowsiness than second-generation antihistamines.

Nasal corticosteroid sprays can be useful for treating nasal allergy symptoms. Examples include Flonase (fluticasone), Rhinocort (budesonide), and Nasonex (mometasone). These medications are most effective when started a week or two before allergy symptoms are expected to start.

For people with allergic rhinitis and asthma, leukotriene modifiers may be a good option. Examples include Singulair (montelukast) and Accolate (zafirlukast). These medications are usually prescribed by a healthcare provider as a chronic, preventative treatment for allergy and asthma symptoms.

Consult a healthcare provider to determine the best treatment option.
