What is Hizentra?

Hizentra is a brand-name prescription drug containing human antibodies (called “immunoglobulin gamma, or IgG antibodies). Hizentra is prescribed to patients with primary humoral immunodeficiency or chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIPD).

Primary humoral immunodeficiency is a shortage of antibodies in the body. This is an inherited condition and works in more than one way. The end result, however, is a shortage of antibodies that leaves the patient vulnerable to infections. Hizentra is meant to regularly replace those missing antibodies with antibodies taken from other people.

CIPD is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath, the protective covering, around peripheral nerves, that is, nerves not in the spine or brain. The swelling causes the myelin sheath to wear away and nerves lose their ability to transmit signals down their length and they eventually die. This results in weakness, numbness, loss of balance, loss of sensation, paralysis, and, eventually, death through respiratory failure.

CIPD can be stopped and, if caught early enough, reversed. The antibodies in Hizentra block the activity of the antibodies directed against nerve cell myelin. They also slow down the activity of cells that produce antibodies. The effects of Hizentra on CIPD should be noticeable within three to five days after each injection.

Hizentra is administered as a subcutaneous injection and can be administered by the patient at home. The dosing schedule can be set to the patient's convenience, from every day to every two weeks. Hizentra is the only IgG therapy that is administered subcutaneously. All other IgG infusions are done as intravenous infusions in a hospital or clinic and typically take about 60 minutes to complete.

What are the side effects of Hizentra?

Nearly all patients who take Hizentra will experience injection site reactions, such as pain, irritation, swelling, redness, and itching. Other common side effects of Hizentra include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, migraine, pain in the extremities, itching, cough, joint pain, rash, and bruising.

Allergic reactions are rare but can be severe and include anaphylaxis, a dangerous drop in blood pressure, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a severe skin reaction that often requires hospitalization. Watch for allergic reactions to Hizentra such as fever, sore throat, facial swelling, swelling in the throat, high blood pressure, chest discomfort, trouble breathing, or a burning sensation. If you experience any of these effects and suspect you are having an allergic reaction, get emergency medical help.
