Is there a generic of Glumetza?

Glumetza is a brand-name prescription drug manufactured by Salix Pharmaceuticals. The generic version of Glumetza is metformin extended-release.

What is Glumetza?

Glumetza is an FDA-approved prescription medication used along with diet and exercise to control high blood sugar. This medication is used specifically in patients with Type 2 diabetes. It works by helping to restore your body's proper response to the insulin you naturally produce. It also decreases the amount of sugar that your liver makes. Lowering and controlling high blood sugar helps to prevent complications such as blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, kidney damage, and sexual function problems.

Glumetza comes in the form of an oral tablet usually taken once daily withr a meal. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.

To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may start you off on a low dose of this medication and gradually increase it over time. Use this medication daily as directed to get the most benefit from it.

Monitor your blood sugar levels and share your results with your doctor on a regular basis. Talk to your doctor about how to treat low blood sugar. If your blood sugar results are still high while taking this medication, your doctor may instruct you to increase your dose. Do not take more or less of this medication without your doctor's approval.

What are the side effects of Glumetza?

Common side effects of Glumetza may include vomiting, nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, weakness, headaches, appetite loss, or a metallic taste in the mouth. Talk to your pharmacist or healthcare provider if you experience any of these effects. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet. Empty tablet shells may appear in your stool. This effect is harmless as your body would have already absorbed the medication. Glumetza may cause low blood sugar, especially if you are using this medication along with other diabetes medications. Keep Glumetza out of reach and out of sight of children and pets.

Glumetza may stimulate ovulation in women who have not yet reached menopause. This can increase the chance of unintended pregnancy. Ask your doctor about this risk.

Lactic acidosis is a dangerous build up of lactic acid in the blood and is a serious side effect of Glumetza. Get emergency medical help if you have unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain, dizziness, or if you feel cold, weak, or tired.

Avoid alcohol while taking Glumetza. It increases the risk of lactic acidosis and also lowers blood sugar.

Allergic reactions to Glumetza are rare. If you have hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical attention.

Ensure that your doctor or pharmacist is aware of all medications you are currently taking before you begin the use of Glumetza. This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
