Colace is used to treat and prevent occasional constipation, and reduce pain or rectal damage caused by hard stools or by straining during bowel movements. This drug essentially works by increasing the amount of water the stool absorbs in the intestines which makes the stool softer and easier to pass.
Colace is not recommended for use any longer than 1 week, unless your healthcare professional has advised you to do so. Speak to your doctor if your symptoms show no improvement, or if you have not had a bowel movement within one to three days.
For adults who are using this product, the recommended dosage is 50-300 mg daily divided into one to four doses each day. While for children two years and over can take 50-150 mg daily divided into one to four doses each day. Even though these doses are recommended, it is best if you can consult with your doctor first to ensure Colace is right for you. If your child is under two years of age, you should speak to your child’s pediatrician about an age-appropriate stool softener or laxative.
Side effects of Colace can include stomach pain, diarrhea, or cramping, and irritated throat.
You should seek immediate medical attention if you exhibit signs of an allergic reaction to Colace. Signs can include hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
