What is Ciloxan?
Ciloxan is a brand-name antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) or corneal ulcers (sores on the surface of the cornea). It also is sometimes used after eye surgery, such as cataract surgery, to prevent bacterial infections.
The active ingredient in Ciloxan is ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, which is a broadly effective antibiotic that works by preventing the growth of bacteria. It is used in a wide variety of brand-name and generic drugs formulated to treat specific or general bacterial infections.
Ciloxan is applied to the eye either as a strip (ointment) or as one or two drops every few hours.
What are the side effects of Ciloxan?
It is common to experience burning, redness, or discomfort after applying Ciloxan to the eye, but this should go away in a few seconds or minutes. Another common side effect of Ciloxan is the formation of a white crust or crystals in the corners of the eye. These crystals will naturally go away in a few days after discontinuing use of the medication.
Less common side effects include but are not limited to blurred vision and sensitivity to light. Some people are allergic to ciprofloxacin and other similar antibiotics. Consult with your physician if burning, itching, redness, or discomfort on your eye persists more than a few minutes after application.
