What is the brand name of Aripiprazole?

Aripiprazole is a generic prescription medication produced by various pharmaceutical companies, including Ajanta Pharma, Alkem Laboratories, and Amneal Pharmaceuticals. The brand-name version of Aripiprazole is Abilify, which is manufactured by Otsuka Pharmaceutical.

What is Aripiprazole?

Aripiprazole is a generic prescription drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of certain mental health conditions, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It may also be prescribed for the treatment of Tourette's disorder or symptoms of irritability caused by autistic disorder.

Aripiprazole is classified as an atypical antipsychotic drug that balances the levels of dopamine and serotonin neurotransmitters in the brain. Treatment with Aripiprazole may help decrease hallucinations, improve concentration, and decrease the frequency and severity of mood swings.

Aripiprazole is not recommended for children with schizophrenia under the age of 13 nor children with bipolar disorder under the age of 10. It should only be used to treat autism symptoms and Tourette's disorder in children over the age of 6.

Generic Aripiprazole is available as an oral tablet that is usually taken once daily. The appropriate dosage is based on age, medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications being taken. The dosage, frequency, or duration of treatment should never be increased or decreased without consulting a healthcare professional. Sudden discontinuation of Aripiprazole may cause withdrawal symptoms.

Aripiprazole is not approved for the treatment of mental health conditions in older adults living with dementia. Tell your doctor or healthcare provider if you have a history of heart disease, stroke, seizures, blood pressure problems, or diabetes. Consult a healthcare provider for medical advice if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using Aripiprazole.

What are the side effects of Aripiprazole?

The most common side effects of Aripiprazole include nausea, headache, dizziness, weight gain, constipation, restlessness, and trouble sleeping. Consult your healthcare provider if side effects persist or worsen. You should also contact your healthcare provider if you experience side effects such as new or worsened depression, panic attacks, violent mood swings, or other behavioral changes.

Other side effects of Aripiprazole may include low blood pressure when changing from sitting or lying to standing and low white blood cell counts. Serious side effects of Aripiprazole may include stroke (in older adults), neuroleptic malignant syndrome, uncontrolled body movements (tardive dyskinesia), seizures, and difficulty swallowing. Aripiprazole may cause high blood sugar levels, which may require monitoring of blood sugar levels in those with diabetes. Changes in cholesterol levels have also been reported with Aripiprazole treatment.

Aripiprazole may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, especially in adolescents and young adults. Suicidal thoughts and mood changes should be monitored while taking Aripiprazole.

Aripiprazole can increase the risk of death in elderly people with dementia-related psychosis.

Allergic reactions are rare but possible after taking Aripiprazole. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult a healthcare provider for more information about other possible side effects, warnings, and precautions before starting treatment with Aripiprazole.

Aripiprazole interactions

When taking Aripiprazole, it is important to be aware of potential drug interactions, which can occur when the medication is taken in combination with other drugs. Aripiprazole can have an effect on the metabolism of other drugs, which may result in increased or decreased levels of those drugs in the body.

Taking Aripiprazole with antihypertensives or medications that lower blood pressure may lead to dangerously low blood pressure. Blood pressure should be monitored when taking Aripiprazole with a blood pressure medication. Caution should be taken when combining Aripiprazole with benzodiazepines like lorazepam. Taking Aripiprazole with a benzodiazepine may lead to increased sedation and low blood pressure.

It is important to inform your doctor or pharmacist of all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements, before starting treatment with aripiprazole.
