What is Afrezza?

Afrezza (regular human insulin) is a brand prescription drug approved for the treatment of type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. This diabetes medication is inhaled and absorbed through the lungs to manage blood sugar levels in those with diabetes. It is a rapid-acting insulin that is typically used at the beginning of each meal. It is not meant to be used as a replacement for basal, or long-acting, insulin. People with Type 1 diabetes will still need to use a long-acting insulin in addition to Afrezza. This type of insulin is not approved for use in treating diabetic ketoacidosis.

Consult with your healthcare provider regarding the correct dosage and frequency for your medical condition. Afrezza comes as a single-use cartridge that is only meant to be opened when used with the inhaler. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for instructions on how to properly administer the medication.

Blood sugar levels may need to be monitored and reported to your doctor regularly. The dosage of this medication is dependent on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not change brands or types of insulin unless advised by a healthcare professional. Tell your doctor about any changes in diet or exercise while on treatment with Afrezza.

Do not use Afrezza if you have chronic lung problems, such as asthma or COPD. You should also avoid Afrezza if you have allergies to regular human insulin products or any ingredients in Afrezza.

What are the side effects of Afrezza?

The most common side effects of Afrezza include coughing and a sore throat. Other side effects include low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia. Contact your doctor if you experience signs or symptoms of low blood sugar, such as extreme drowsiness, sweating, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, or tingling in the extremities.

Your healthcare provider may need to monitor your lung function throughout the duration of treatment with Afrezza to ensure it is right for you. Your doctor may also want to monitor for rare, but serious adverse effects in the lungs, such as lung cancer.

Severe allergic reactions to Afrezza are uncommon. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience hives, rash, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face or throat.

You should contact your provider if you experience muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat, which may be symptoms of low levels of potassium in the blood (hypokalemia).

Seek medical advice from your doctor before starting treatment using Afrezza. This is not a complete list of side effects.
