What is Abraxane?

Abraxane is a prescription medication used to treat breast cancer, lung cancer, and pancreatic cancer. The active ingredient in this medication is paclitaxel which belongs to a class of drugs known as chemotherapy drugs. Abraxane works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells in the body.

Abraxane is administered by a healthcare professional as an infusion into a vein. For the treatment of breast cancer, this medication is usually given once every three weeks. Ultimately, your doctor will determine the length of your treatment based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.

Abraxane may lower your blood cell count, which can be severe and result in infection or sepsis. Your blood will need to be tested often to monitor your blood cell count levels. Talk to your doctor directly for more information on this medication.

Abraxane contains paclitaxel, but cannot be substituted or interchanged with other paclitaxel products.

Tell your doctor about all of the medical conditions you have and all of the medications you take, including prescription, over-the-counter, and vitamins. If you are female, tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. If you are a male with a female sexual partner that can become pregnant, inform your doctor.

What are the side effects of Abraxane?

Abraxane may cause different side effects depending on what it is being used to treat. Some common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mouth sores, headaches, muscle or joint pain, numbness or tingling feeling in your hands, weakness, or dizziness. Consult your doctor if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects such as unusual tiredness, pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, irregular heartbeat, pain or swelling in the arms or legs, or vision changes.

Serious allergic reactions to this medication are usually rare. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as itching, rash, swelling in your face or throat, severe dizziness, tightness in your chest, or trouble breathing.

Check with your doctor or healthcare provider for professional medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Abraxane as this is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor for additional information and treatment options.
