Xeomin is a brand-name prescription drug. There is currently no generic version of this medication.
Xeomin is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat severe spasms in the neck muscles (cervical dystonia), eyelid muscles (blepharospasm), and upper limbs or arms. It can also treat excessive salivation or drooling caused by facial muscle control impairment (sialorrhea) common in neurological problems like stroke or Parkinson’s disease. Like Botox, Xeomin is used as a common aesthetic treatment to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face.
The active ingredient in Xeomin is incobotulinumtoxinA. It works by blocking certain nerve signals in the muscles, which causes a temporary reduction in muscle contractions. Xeomin is also called botulinum toxin A and is made from bacteria that cause botulism.
Xeomin comes in the form of a powder and is administered as a solution for injection. It is usually injected into a gland or a muscle. Your healthcare provider may give you this medication once every 12 to 16 weeks. Ideally, Xeomin injections should be spaced out at least three months apart. You should not take this injection if you are allergic to botulinum toxin, or if you have an infection, swelling, or muscle weakness in the area where the injection is to be applied. This medication should only be given by a trained medical professional.
Tell your healthcare professional about all medications you are currently taking before you begin treatment with Xeomin. Your doctor will decide on the best dose appropriate for you based on an assessment of your medical condition and your body's response to treatment.
Most side effects resulting from the use of Xeomin tend to occur at the injection site, such as redness, bruising, infection and pain. Other common side effects may include but are not limited to dry mouth, dry eyes, back pain, headaches, upper respiratory infections, and muscle weakness. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen.
Serious allergic reactions to this medication are usually rare. However, you should contact your doctor right away if you begin to notice signs of an allergic reaction while taking this medication. Signs of an allergic reaction may include itching, swelling of the tongue, face, or throat, rash, trouble breathing, and severe dizziness.
Check with your healthcare provider for complete medical advice on the health risks and benefits associated with Xeomin.
