Lithium is a prescription drug used to treat bipolar I disorder. It can be prescribed as an acute treatment for manic episodes, or it can be used as a maintenance treatment for reducing the incidence and severity of manic episodes. Lithium is also sometimes prescribed off-label to treat major depression.
Lithium belongs to a drug class called antimanic agents. The exact way in which Lithium works is unknown. However, it is believed to help regulate certain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, that play a role in mood disorders.
Lithium is usually taken as an oral tablet in strengths of 150 mg, 300 mg, or 600 mg. It also comes as an oral solution in a concentration of 8 mEq/5 mL. Lithium is often prescribed to be taken three times per day. Depending on the severity of the condition and the person’s response to the medication, the dose may be increased.
Common side effects of Lithium that have been reported to the FDA include dizziness, drowsiness, tremors, dry mouth, increased thirst or urination, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, weight gain, memory problems, and blurred vision.
Lithium toxicity is a concern if you are prescribed this medication. Signs of toxicity may include lightheadedness, weakness, lack of coordination, shortness of breath, and severe vomiting or diarrhea. Other signs of toxicity may include confusion or seizures. Always take Lithium according to your doctor’s instructions. The dosage of Lithium may need to be monitored closely in certain people depending on their condition.
This is not a complete list of the possible side effects associated with Lithium use. Seek medical advice from your doctor or healthcare provider before taking Lithium.
