What is Lithium?

Lithium is a prescription drug used to treat bipolar I disorder. It can be prescribed as an acute treatment for manic episodes, or it can be used as a maintenance treatment for reducing the incidence and severity of manic episodes. Lithium is also sometimes prescribed off-label to treat major depression.

Lithium belongs to a drug class called antimanic agents. The exact way in which Lithium works is unknown. However, it is believed to help regulate certain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, that play a role in mood disorders.

What doses of Lithium are available?

Lithium is usually taken as an oral tablet in strengths of 150 mg, 300 mg, or 600 mg. It also comes as an oral solution in a concentration of 8 mEq/5 mL. Lithium is often prescribed to be taken three times per day. Depending on the severity of the condition and the person’s response to the medication, the dose may be increased.

What are the side effects of Lithium?
