Anusol-Hc is a brand-name prescription skin cream or rectal suppository with 2.5% hydrocortisone acetate. Generic hydrocortisone acetate cream is supplied by generic manufacturers such as Crown, Sebela, and Taro. Generic hydrocortisone acetate suppositories are available from Nucare, Paddock, and other generic manufacturers.
Anusol-Hc is a prescription skin cream or rectal suppository that treats skin inflammation, irritation, redness, and itching (i.e., Anusol-Hc cream) or hemorrhoid symptoms, anal itching, or irritation and swelling due to anal fissures (i.e, Anusol-Hc suppositories).
Anusol-Hc suppositories are also used to treat anal and rectal injury due to radiation therapy and to relieve the pain of rectal sores due to ulcerative colitis (swelling and sores in the colon and rectum).
The active ingredient in Anusol-Hc, hydrocortisone acetate, is a synthetic steroid that belongs to a class of drugs called corticosteroids. Hydrocortisone activates cells into manufacturing proteins that block the immune system's production of chemicals that cause swelling and irritation. By reducing swelling, Anusol-Hc relieves irritation, pain, itching, and soreness caused by swelling.
As a cream, Anusol-Hc is applied to the affected area two to four times a day. As a suppository, Anusol-Hc is administered twice per day, morning and evening, for two weeks.
The most common side effects of Anusol-Hc are irritation, stinging, burning, rash, itching, and other allergic reactions. Hydrocortisone cream may also cause pimples, loss of skin pigmentation, thinning of the skin, swollen hair follicles, and stretch marks. Hydrocortisone suppositories may cause rectal burning, rectal pain, rectal bleeding, or black, tarry stools. Damage to the rectal wall because of improper insertion of the suppository is common.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. If you have questions about side effects, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
