What is Anafranil?
Anafranil is a prescription drug that reduces obsessive and compulsive thinking in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), a condition characterized by excessive and unreasonable thoughts (obsessions) that lead to excessively-repeated behaviors (compulsions). There are several causes of OCD, but one of them is an imbalance in the chemicals that send messages between nerve cells in the brain.
The active ingredient in Anafranil, clomipramine, works by rebalancing these nerve-signaling chemicals. Clomipramine is a “monoamine oxidase inhibitor,” that is, it blocks a protein, monoamine oxidase, which sometimes removes these nerve signaling chemicals too quickly. With improved nerve communication, the brain is better able to regulate thoughts and behaviors.
Anafranil typically takes four to six weeks to show noticeable improvement.
What are the side effects of Anafranil?
The most common side effects of Anafranil include, but are not limited to, dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, upset stomach, loss of appetite, insomnia, sweating, vision changes, difficulty having an orgasm, decreased sex drive, and impotence.
